The first use of the phrase is by Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager. He used it to describe the very tense league title race against Arsenal in 2003.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "the tense final stages of a league competition, especially from the point of view of the leaders".

Looks like it's squeaky bum time again this season too
